Ricky Ponting has stepped down from the Test and one-day captaincy role, but would like to continue on as a player in both teams, if selected.
Ponting said he hopes to be selected in the squad to tour Bangladesh when it is announced tomorrow.
Michael Brown, Cricket Australia General Manager says the new captain will be appointed tomorrow (Wednesday).
"Our national selectors are independent. They will take a recommendation to the board," Brown said.
"Everybody is in the mix, and I'd assume Michael Clarke will be a very hot candidate.
"The board has a decision to make based on the recommendation of the selectors."
Ponting addressed the press conference and said:
"I have decided to step down as captain of the Test and one-day teams as of now."
"I feel it is the right time, and gives the incoming captain time before the next Ashes series.
"I am still available for selection, and would like to carry on playing in the team.
"I'd like to thank my teammates, coaches, team management and selectors.
"I'm excited about the future for me as a player. I hope to give the next captain my full and total support for as long as my playing days.
"I will continue to give my best as a player.
Ponting backed Michael Clarke to take over as captain of the Test and one-day sides, giving his "full endorsement".
Ponting said he has not received a "tap on the shoulder" from selectors or Cricket Australia, it has been a decision made by him alone.
"I'm reasonably confident of being picked in the touring side for Bangladesh in a few days' time," Ponting added.
"But I have received no guarantees, I just have to hope I get selected.
"My decision wasn't made until late last night. I spoke with Michael (Clarke) early this morning.
"He is probably reasonably excited about the decision I have made."
Ponting said he is very proud of what he has achieved in the game as a player and as a captain.
He believes that number three is still his best batting position in the team but is willing to take feedback from the incoming captain.
"The timing is absolutely perfect. We've got series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa coming up," Ponting said.
"I want to make sure the person coming in has as much time as they can to prepare."
