We're in Melbourne early for the TV Week Logies, and so is Katy Perry, who wowed, teased and entertained thousand of fans at Myer in the Melbourne CBD today.
Not to anyone's surprise there was no sign of husband Russell Brand, but that didn't stop the media or crowd asking, as they are quite the power couple these days.
The 26-year-old performing artist looked sensational and was very accommodating with both fans and media.
We learnt that she just loves Australians easy-going attitude, our weather (thank you Melbourne for the miracle sun and no rain today), Tim Tams, and eskies.
"I love being around all kinds of characters in Australia," Perry told the crowd of thousands, when they finally settled down from a massive 'We want Katy' chant, which must have gone on for at least fifteen minutes. Some of the crowd rushed to Myer retail departments to snap up both Perry CD's and Purr perfume (which gives an "added bonus" to your man, Katy was quick to point out to us.
The queen of 'Teenage Dream', and soon teenage retail, is struggling with her Aussie lingo, but we give her top marks for effect, attitude and generosity of heart and spirit with her multitudes on fans hanging on every word and move. She got her cosses mixed up with eskies, but that's ok. Katy looked like she might do well to get a bit of sun, so someone needs to tell her where Bondi Beach is.
Perry had the crowd screaming and clamouring for photos and autographs, and as usual, security had a tough job, with most of them doing their job well.
Bourke Street mall came to a standstill, as 1000 or so fans stood behind steel barricades just hoping to catch a glimpse. Four Katy Perry look-a-likes kept the crowd entertained and and teased the press with purr fect poses with the perfume of the hour. Oh, the trams kept running, but slowed considerable, as passengers soon realised what all the fuss was about.
Perry commenced her first Australian tour in two years with shows in Melbourne on Thursday and Friday nights and is the big-name international act for tomorrow's Logie awards at James Packer's Crown Casino.
Her appearance today was actually to flog her new fragrance, Purr, and we estimated at least 500 units were sold. Even a couple of Aussie teen lads bought the Purr, which helped them get a photo, as you might have guessed.
We loved that she answered a journo's probing question about receiving plenty of male attention.
"I'm a big believer in sharing so I like to share myself. I feel like I'm in a relationship with all of you plus my husband. I feel like the people that support me and my music and who come to see my shows are choice people; they have good taste, they're smart, they're funny, they like to have a great time, they like to laugh. And also they're very respectful ... if anyone gets too close I karate chop them."
An unidentified reporter asked Katy if she could ask Russell if she could take him home or something to that effect. She laughed it off and then added he might be able to stay in the granny flat room for a bit. Security and minders swiftly snatched away the mic off the shortish mystery media guy.
It was quite a wait for the American sensation and but all agreed the reward was worth it. Perry said "You guys were making so much noise when I was trying to use the restroom".
What a Purr Fect day in Melbourne today if you made it, and we can't wait for the main course tomorrow at the Logies and follow up shows as her Aussie tour continues.
We loved you Katy, and so did our cameras. We can't wait to show the world our great photos and videos of you. The visuals are purr fect said a Music News Australia spokesperson.

Crown Casino Braces For TV Week Logies; Katy Perry On Despite Lawsuit, by Greg Tingle - 29th April 2011
Australia's night of nights - the TV Week Logie Awards are to hit James Packer's Crown Casino - The Palladium to be exact, and security is to be on high alert as Katy Perry is to perform despite a lawsuit against ACP Magazines for story she says is not true. And, security and Crown Casino powers that be have banned mobile devices in response to last years Twitter-Gate, where one writer was fired for inappropriate Tweets. Will plastic handcuffs be required and will any footballer players or guests run a muck? Media Man and Gambling911 with the calm before the storm that is forecast to hit the TV Week Logies at James Packer's most famous casino...
Crown Casino Expects Huge TV Week Logies Night; Show Must Go On Despite Katy Perry Lawsuit...
James Packer, Australian gambling and media king loves this event - certainly the positives it brings his world famous Crown Casino in Melbourne - home of the original real life and TV Underbelly (in with a slight chance of a Logie we hear).
On the 1st of May Australia and the world will know who the Logies winners will be, and there's going to be plenty of news and gossip stemming from the prestigious event also.
'The Teenage Dream'... call her what you will (but we are not sure on the Russell Brand statue these days before you ask us), has her scheduled performance confirmed at the Logies On Sunday evening. Not even her lawsuit against ACP Magazines...publishers of TV Week is going to slow down this runaway train.
Perry who arrived in about 56 hours ago in Melbourne for her down under tour, has fired off a lawsuit to ACP's women's gossip mag NW claiming it falsely reported that Perry married for six months to Russell Brand (star of Arthur and all round bloody funny chap)... has been having an affair with record producer Benny Blanco. It's implied it was more than a fling.
Her writ, lodged in the Victoria Supreme Court against ACP Magazines, said: "By reason of the publication of the article, the plaintiff (Perry) has been gravely injured in her reputation and feelings (and) has suffered distress, embarrassment and humiliation."
The suit, lodged on Wednesday, has put a shadow over the Logies Awards since ACP - the main partner of the event - is reportedly remunerating Perry in the region of $300,000 to perform on the big night.
The publishing firm may even have to more if Perry's suit is successful. Her label EMI Music yesterday confirmed the pop singer was still due to perform.
ACP spokesman Peter Holder said: "ACP or Nine Entertainment Co have not been served with any court documents as yet and have no comment to make."
It's understood NW executive editor Corrine Barraclough flew to Melbourne yesterday to consult with lawyers.

Shane Bourne To Host Logie Awards...

South Australia Police Officers Investigation Probe Over Casino Fight...
A double Australian tag team...4...off-duty police officers are under investigation over a brawl at Adelaide's famous SkyCity Casino. Just after midnight yesterday, a bloke came out of a toilet and complained to a guard a group of men were harassing him. News outlet Channel 7 reported last night the group emerged from the toilet and approached the man, who is alleged to have told them: "Leave me alone, I don't want anything to do with this."
A fight then erupted, in which casino gaming tables were knocked for six and seven security guards rushed to the incident. The men were notified Hindley St police had been called, to which they allegedly replied: "We are the police." Police are reviewing security footage, and Superintendent Graham Goodwin said an investigation was continuing. We wish the police good luck with the investigation - both sides of the police.

Famous Australian Gambler And Sportsman Brendan Fevola Will Pay Kids' Charity...
You know the name, and you know some of his games. AFL, poker and casino slots. Fev will make a payment to well known and respected charity Variety. They will be the beneficiary of ex AFL star Brendan Fevola's drunken New Year's Eve. The former Carlton and Brisbane full forward will pay about $2000 to the charity to avoid charges of obstructing police and public nuisance. Fevola was arrested after ignoring police instructions to get off the road in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley about 4.30am on New Year's Day. The situation degenerated when he resisted arrest and threatened police, allegedly saying: "Come on, take your hat and badge off, I'll smash you." The dual-Coleman medallist had pleaded guilty to the charges but entered mediation talks with police this month to have them dropped. He also wrote a letter of apology to the police involved. Fevola's lawyer Jim Coburn told Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday mediation had been successful and a commitment has been signed for Fevola to donate the money. The charity, Variety Queensland, was chosen by police. Fevola has two weeks to fulfil the mediation terms. Fevola, who has struggled with gambling and alcohol issues throughout his career, lost about $1 million through betting and admitted he attempted suicide at his lowest point. He spent two months in rehab to deal with mental health and addiction issues after the altercation with police. The living legend was sacked by the Brisbane Lions while he was still in rehab, a move which drew criticism from some quarters, including the AFL Players' Association. Fevola moved back to Melbourne after his release from rehab to be closer to his family, however he is now estranged from his wife Alex and three daughters. His battle with gambling is ongoing. He has been removed from James Packer owned Crown Casino as well as a suburban pokies venue in recent months. Fevola has not given up hope of returning to the AFL, playing for VFL side Casey Scorpions to help rebuild his career. We wish Fev well with his ongoing journey.
Crown Casino Grease Shaft Trap Man Ocean's One Slips Legal Charges In Melbourne...
A Melbourne 26 year-old known as "Grease Trap Man" and "Ocean's One" after he was rescued from a ventilation shaft at Crown casino walked out...slipped away if you will... a free man from court yesterday. Melbourne Magistrates' Court heard two charges against Brook Adrian Valencic, 26, had been withdrawn by prosecutors. Valencic, of Sydenham, faced a charge of criminal damage to a door at Crown and a second charge of trespass, over the incident in July last year. It is believed the crim defence planned to argue he was so drunk he could remember nothing of the incident and police concluded they could not prove the charges. Valencic spent hours trapped in the grease-filled ventilation shaft and was pulled clear by a search and rescue crew after staff at the Automatic Cafe heard screaming when they turned on the ovens. He was covered head to toe in grease, as was worried his might of been in line for a cooked alive number ala battered fish fry. The rescuers had to crawl into the shaft to rescue Valencic, who was hot and dehydrated, but otherwise unharmed, yet a touch worried about what was about to get cooked. At the time of the incident firefighters thought he entered the steel duct from a stairwell, crawled about 30m, and then fell vertically through the vents until he became wedged above the cafe's grill. Valencic left court without talking to the press. Crown Casino security and law enforcement agencies will be watching Crown Casino like hawks as The Logies is to take place on the 1st April, opened by performing artist come casino babe Katy Perry.

Sin City: crime & corruption in 20th-century Sydney
http://www.hht.net.au/whats_on/highlights/exhibitions/sin_city
No city in the world can rival Sydney's tolerance for organised crime - Professor Alfred W McCoy, 1980. In the second half of the 20th century, Sin City was in every way a fitting nickname for Sydney. Organised crime held a grip on the city and corruption was rife, infiltrating the top levels of politics, law and justice. Focusing on the 1940s to the 1980s, this exhibition will examine some of the audacious crimes, fascinating people and various vice trades – from suburban SP bookmakers and sly-grog sellers to narcotics dealers and flashy illegal casinos – that bankrolled corruption...
Keith Bulfin; Casino And Business Criminal Tells His Story In Undercover Tell All Book...
His colourful story, described in his autobiographical novel Undercover, reads like a movie script. Bulfin says while the novel is fiction, it is based on the true events of his life. The events may sound fantastical, he says, but he can prove it all actually happened. The story starts in the 1990s, when he was running a mortgage company, and fell out of favor of the law on a charge of conspiracy to defraud in the valuations of Lasseters Casino and Dreamworld. “My lawyers said, ‘You’ve got no chance, they’ll throw the book at you’. I pleaded guilty and got sent to prison,” he says. Bulfin was stabbed and beaten several times at Port Phillip Prison, and progressively moved to higher security sections with tougher criminals at every turn, until he ended up in a so-called supermax unit. "There are 20 people in the unit, and you’re under surveillance 24/7. It’s one of the worst units in Australia," Bulfin says. Bulfin advised he has a good reason for writing a book about such a dangerous man, someone who could easily arrange for him to be killed. "I was sick of psychologists. I thought I’ll write a book, and maybe it’s therapy," he says. "Also, by writing a book, I’m safer, and now no-one can threaten me." Bulfin says his book, which was originally intended to be released as a true story, is going to be made into a movie called The Banker. Keith Bulfin will be speaking at this year’s Bayside Literary Festival on May 22 from 1pm–2.30pm. The event will be held at the Brighton Savoy, 150 The Esplanade. Cost is $10, and afternoon tea will be provided.
Aussie Rock Gods INXS Play Moncton Casino On July 7...
Australian rock group INXS is going to perform at Casino New Brunswick's Entertainment Centre in Moncton in July. The band, performing in support of new album Original Sin, will start the rock n roller Thursday, July 7 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Over the span of the band's 30-year career, INXS has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. They have scored hits on four different continents and have received MTV Awards, World Music Awards, two Grammy nominations, British Music Awards and Gold, Platinum and Diamond sales status on their records. They have also performed over 4,000 live shows for more than 25 million people in almost 50 countries. First as the Farriss Brothers, then as INXS, the band is made up of brothers Tim, Jon and Andrew Farriss, along with Kirk Pengilly and Garry Gary Beers. Original INXS singer Michael Hutchence died in 1997 via a dark and adventurous sexual method and has been replaced at various times by different singers, notably J.D. Fortune who grew up in Nova Scotia. Fortune is fronting the band on stage, but on Original Sin new versions of classic INXS hits were recorded with various vocalists, including Train's Pat Monahan, Rob Thomas and Ben Harper. Tickets for the Moncton INXS show go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. Casino execs think INXS will boost numbers to the venue and should see more folks trying their luck on casino games. Sounds like something to check out.

The Terminator Tempting Arnold Schwarzenegger, by Greg Tingle
Arnie is looking to leap forward from his role as the Governator, he's ready to return to his signature role as the Terminator - the man you love to hate.
The Hollywood, sporting and political icon is ready for action, and his reps at CAA, have put together a sweet offer that it's pitching to the studios that includes rights to produce a new Terminator sequel, which would be directed by Justin Lin, just off doing Fast Five, which opens domestically Friday, and produced by Robert Cort. No screenwriter has come on board as of press, but that may change soon.
There's interest in bringing back The Terminator franchise, which has pumped out four flicks to date, ranging from the original James Cameron-directed 1984 release The Terminator and its sequel, 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, to the last film in the series, 2009's Terminator Salvation, the only one in which Schwarzenegger did not play in.
When the movie's rights holder the Halcyon Group went through bankruptcy in 2010, Lionsgate and Sony joined together in an unsuccessful bid to snatch the franchise for themselves. More recently, Universal has been talking to CAA about tackling the project.
But winning the package could be very expensive. In last year's bankruptcy proceedings, Pacificor, a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund, won the rights to the property for $29.5 million plus a promise to pay Halcyon $5 million for each sequel that is produced. Pacificor would be part of any new production.
It's going to see if anyone gets terminated in the process. Hasta la vista, baby.

ZZ Top, Rose Tattoo And The Poor Do Enmore Theatre, by Eva Rinaldi - 27th April 2011
Who is top in Sydney at the moment? Yeah, you guessed it - ZZ Top.
Rose Tattoo and The Poor are pretty darn hot too, and they all played their hearts out at Enmore Theatre earlier tonight.
ZZ Top are a legendary Texan music trio who have been rocking and rolling for more than 4 decades. Inducted by The Stones' Keith Richards into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ back in 2004, they just keep rocking and still look unstoppable, and not too bad for their age.
The band was was happy to be quoted by the press: "We’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords. The band’s mantra remains the same: ‘Tone. Taste. Tenacity" said Billy F Gibbons, ZZ's guitarist.
ZZ Top has performed live in front of millions of fans around the globe. Their image - cars, bikes, beards, girls, keychain and all that, is known around the world and seems almost as big as their music. Make no mistake, these guys are rock gods.
Legs would be their most famous hit, probably followed by Gimme All Your Lovin’ and Sharp Dressed Man. Tonight I got to hear Future and Rock Me for the first time, and they definitely rate and were pretty well received by the jam packed audience.
ZZ Top impressed the heck out of me and I would seriously recommend you check them out too if you have the chance.
Ok, the others.... Rose Tattoo, headed up by Sydney's angriest man (just kidding Andy), Angry Anderson. Anderson leaped onto the stage early in the peace, and from the get go you could tell he and the boyz were ready to part-eee.
The Poor, rich on talent, didn't disappoint, and were worthy of also being a support to the other legendary bands.
Australia, if the show in Sydney was any indication of what these 3 bad boy rock bands are going to keep running with on their down under tour, you'll just have to attend in person to truly appreciate just how good they are.
Promoter, Andrew McManus, well done on putting it all together. You did yourself proud.

Donald 'The Don' Trump VS Robert Di Niro, by Greg Tingle - 27th April 2011
It's the original Godfather and Taxi Driver, Robert Di Niro VS Donald Trump, the casino, hotel, property and media entrepreneur. Trump is thinking of entering the U.S Presidential race, and Robert De Niro does not like it one bit. What happens with 'The Don' gets into a verbal war of words with the other 'Don'? Glad you asked Media Man and Gambling911 with the would be 'Mafia wars' being played out in the press...
Donald Trump VS Robert De Niro Showdown; War Of The Don's...
Donald Trump, the billionaire property tycoon who is considering running for US president, has picked a wrestling match with living legend actor Robert De Niro after the Oscar-winning actor compared him to a "car salesman". Gambling followers will be familiar with De Niro's portrayal of Vegas casino boss and sometime mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal). Mr Trump punched back in and aggressive manner that you see on the U.S version of The Apprentice, suggesting that De Niro was "not the brightest bulb on the planet" and "not Albert Einstein". The public feud began after Trump who has teased a campaign for the Republican nomination to challenge Barack Obama next year, questioned where the president was born. Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, but conspiracy theorists allege that his birthplace was actually in Kenya, which would make him ineligible to serve as president. De Niro, 67, the iconic star of films such as Raging Bull and Goodfellas, and a Democrat supporter, was probed about the issue during an interview at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York at the weekend. "I won't mention names, but certain people in the news the last couple of weeks, just what are they doing?" he replied. "It's crazy. They're making statements about people that they don't even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people." De Niro, who confirmed he was talking about Trump, added: "It's like a big hustle. It's like being a car salesman. Don't go out there and say things unless you can back them up. How dare you? That's awful to do. "To just go out and speak and say these terrible things? Unless you just want to get over and get the job. It's crazy." Mr Trump hit back at his fellow New Yorker, saying: "I've been watching him over the years and I like his acting, but in terms of when I watch him doing interviews and various other things, we're not dealing with Albert Einstein. "He can say what he wants, but the fact is this guy (Obama) has not revealed his birth certificate. A lot of people agree with me." Trump suggested in another media interview on Monday that Prez Obama had been a poor student who did not deserve to be admitted into an Ivy League university. Obama graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1983 after transferring from Occidental College in California. He went on to graduate from Harvard Law School. "I heard he was a terrible student, terrible. How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?" Trump said. "I'm thinking about it, I'm certainly looking into it. Let him show his records." Trump has still not announced whether he will seek the Republican nomination to run in 2012, but polls put him at the head of the field. During the 2008 presidential campaign, De Niro spoke at a rally get together for Obama in New Jersey, telling the crowd: "I've never made a speech like this at a political event. So what am I doing here? Finally, one person has inspired me. Guess who." Trump's public slanging match with De Niro has not been his only recent dispute with a Hollywood icon. Last week Seinfeld, the actor and comedian, pulled out of a charity event being held by Trump's son Eric, saying he was "increasingly uncomfortable" with the billionaire's questioning of Obama's citizenship. Trump responded by attacking Seinfeld for "breaking his commitment". He also had an on-air tiff with Whoopi Goldberg, the actress, over the birther movement last month, and this week Michael Bloomberg, the New York mayor and a friend of Trump's, called on him to "focus on the main issues".

Lindsay Lohan May Snatch Gotti Movie Role...
Lohan is back in the running for a proposed film about the Gotti crime family after she personally asked its hesitant producer to give her a go. The troubled actress, whose promising career has been hit hard by drug and criminal problems, had been in negotiations for a role in "Gotti: Three Generations," starring John Travolta as mob boss John Gotti, Sr. She even showed up at a news conference announcing the project last week. But producer Marc Fiore said earlier Wednesday that he had broken off talks because of demands made by Lohan's management team, and planned to meet with other actresses. Hours later, he appeared to have been swayed by the "Mean Girls" actress herself. "We had a little rocky road today, but Lindsay definitely revived the situation," Fiore told Reuters, adding that Lohan called him personally to plead her case. Lohan would play Kim Gotti, the wife of Gotti's namesake son, Fiore said. Previous news reports said she was in line to play his daughter, Victoria. Fiore said the Kim role was bigger since the movie is about the father-son relationship. Fiore has the cooperation of retired mobster John Gotti, Jr., whose character has yet to be cast. His father, the so-called "Teflon Don," died of cancer in 2002 while serving a life term for murder, racketeering, extortion and tax evasion. Fiore said he hoped to announce a new director next week. Nick Cassavetes, who was originally attached, exited the project earlier this week because of a scheduling conflict. Shooting is expected to start in October. Fiore said the budget for the self-financed film was $70 million to $80 million. He declined to specify the source of the funds. Gambling fans will love this one. No, we're not going to give you the spoilers, not yet anyway.

Australia's Hidden World Of Internet Gambling, by Greg Tingle - 26th April 2011
Like most countries, Australia has an underbelly or underground of various industries, be it security, sex, tourism, drugs and you guessed it - gambling. While must of Australia's casino, poker and other gambling sub sectors are out in the open, some are not we learn. Media Man and Gambling911 dig beneath the underbelly of the Australian gambling sector and uncover some interesting facts...
Down Under Gambling's Secret Millionaires...
Some are Australia's secret millionaires and some are anything but, but they both love the punt... often via online poker. They have ups and downs. Many players make a full time living out of it, while others job hop, visit Centrelink for their fortnight welfare payment, and keep their poker dream alive. Once in a while some win the one or even get lucky on online slots. The smart ones stick with games of skill, where there's not so much "luck" involved.
For many young Australian entrepreneurs normal jobs are out of the question, and turn the the web in search of something better and riches, and a growing number have found online poker and website portal creation as a way to rise up and express their entrepreneurial spirit and enjoy playing, even creating, games for financial reward.
They "work" pretty much when they like, make money sometimes tax free, party with mates when they choose, hang out in internet cafes, and you get the idea.
Banana Bender land in Queensland, as well as a growing number of young guys in 'Sin City' Sydney is where most of the gurus call home.
Up in Northern Queensland, Townsville to be precise, there's a talented online poker player... lets call him Dominic. He's ranked second in Queensland, according to poker tracking website Pocket Fives. He's played full-time since 2007, bringing in thousands via tournaments that sometimes only last half a working day.
He trained as a teacher, got a psychology degree and then discovered online poker. Coombe knew full time poker was the way to go after winning a $40,000 jackpot during a seven-hour online tournament. His biggest win has been $101,000.
"With poker, I started winning small tournaments and then gradually bigger and bigger ... and the snowball just started rolling. I love the game and I love being my own boss. It's just the flexibility and not having to answer to someone else."
Many of the online poker sharks are pretty low key when it come to news media reports. Coombe won't say what his total career winnings are.
We understand that the top 10 ranked players earn up to $750,000 a year, but basically all of the players have to put in a big days work to help make sure they come out on top at the end of the week - day - month. Over 12 hours a day, 7 days a week... whatever it takes.
"For a high stakes player it's quite normal to have downswings of $50,000 or $100,000. You could have a year when you could make $200,000 and another year that's nowhere near that," Coombe said.
The Australian Tax Office said gambling winnings were only taxed if it was part of "business operations" but the definition remained unclear in the online world.
Australian online poker players have watch with keen interest last week's US indictment of the founders of the three largest websites - PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker.
The FBI charged 11 people with bank fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling and most players in the US were unable to withdraw their bankroll from websites.
Online poker comes with many grey areas in the legal area, keeping many a legal eagle employed.
A Media Man spokesperson said "I don't play online poker and have hardly ever played online slots for money. We run a media and new media company and covering the online gambling sector is just one of a dozen sectors we cover. We write articles on all matter of things and participate in a number of affiliate programs across a wide range of industries from property to mobiles, travel, as well as doing some for games. We also have ran some media and publicity campaigns and assist celebrities campaigns from time to time. We're not a gambling company or an adult company. We're a media and new media company, who cover the gaming and gambling sector from a global perspective, in addition to many other industries. It's pretty much business as usual, but also hope to expand to Canada and Italy later this year where they are not so many grey areas. The internet and online poker encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and help many people achieve their dreams and aspirations away from the grind of a normal job. The internet is one of the greatest inventions ever and online poker and casino games are perfect for the medium. It's not going away and will only grow in popularity".
U.S - Aussie Banks and Online Poker American - Sydney Sin City Web Host Connection...
Australian banks have been handling payments to overseas-based online poker sites that have been illegally taking up to a $1 billion a year in bets from local punters.
Several of the major Australian financial institutions have been used by Sydney-based payment processors to take deposits from punters on the world's biggest online poker sites, which were targeted last weekend in a US money-laundering sting.
St George Bank -- one of the institutions named by the the poker websites to use for "local bank transfers" -- said it was unaware that one of its clients, Envoy Services, was processing payments of local punters to outlawed online gaming operators PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.
"We were not aware of their links to these online companies and will be investigating further," a St George Bank spokesman said after being shown evidence by the media.
Australian Bank Caught Up In U.S Online Poker Scandal...
The United States major crime fighting unit, the FBI smacked money-laundering, bank-fraud and gambling charges last weekend against the three huge online poker firms - PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker - after targeting US-based payment processors that had tricked banks into handling the financial transactions.
Down under in Australia federal legislation introduced in 2001 prohibits gambling sites offering poker, bingo and casino games to Australians. The websites thought to be required to include warnings to this effect, but online gambling comes with a lot of grey areas and legally untested areas. The legislation allows Australian-based firms to offer the same services to overseas-based players, at least in most cases, but again, many gray areas exist. A website can change web hosts from Australia, then to Europe, Canada, and so the list goes on. Think like Wikipedia with back ups around the world.
Last year a Productivity Commission report advised many overseas-based websites were openly flouting the law by only instructing users to check the law in their jurisdiction before using the website, and predicted that about $1bn in online bets would be snatched from Aussies last year. The commission called for the online gaming industry to be legalised so it could be regulated and taxed.
Aussie celebs such as Shane Warne, and poker celebs such as Stewart Scott, are the face of some online poker rooms, which often cross sell online casino games. Australia's have taken to the Hollywood themed online slot games from PartyGaming, which recently merged with bwin to become bwin.party digital entertainment. Even the WWE, yes, the wrestling giant, has an online poker brand, so does Hustler - the hard core men's adult magazine, and Marvel Comics themed slot games are all the rage, with Thor and The Incredible Hulk enjoying massive patronage with Australians.
Australian regulators such as the Australian Communication and Media Authority and the Australian Federal Police have not enforced the ban, despite ACMA confirming it had received 46 "valid complaints" about the websites in the 2009-10 financial year.
An ACMA spokesperson said those complaints were "still being investigated". Online gambling companies and website portal operators are known to be well lawyer ed up... you know, legal eagles in abundance to protest the nest eggs, and a massive amount of legal "grey area" remains.
It has also come to light that all three major online gaming operators targeted in the US investigation had their sites hosted by Sydney-based IP servers. Yep, 'Sin City' Sydney did it again.
The news comes as the Gillard Labor government attempts to put limits on pokies following a push by the independent MP Andrew Wilkie to reduce problem gambling. Internet Industry Association chief executive Peter Coroneos said the 2001 laws were ineffective.
Reports and rumours have surfaced in the past few weeks that the big 3 poker websites have lost a lot players but PartyPoker, PartyCasino and PKR are all up. Website portals such as Media Man have showcased some games available, in addition to rules of play, legal aspects and commentary, and so on.
A Media Man spokesperson said "How do you mandate human behavior. Many Aussies just love a punt, and that's just the way it is. When you make something illegal or hard to get, more often than not it becomes more popular. The thought police have experienced a backlash in Australia and the gambling debate has proved a major trigger point for it. If you can bet on it, most Aussies will give it a go mate. Good luck".

European Poker Websites Sites Boom; Australian Looking Up, by Greg Tingle - 25th April 2011
Online poker websites traffic; Shares Boom - Players Triggered By UIGEA charges
European poker websites, pretty much immune to the issues in the United States, have reported a boom in player activity following the indictment by American authorities of the owners of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker.
American land based casino and resort tycoon Steve Wynn, a long time detractor of online casinos, had overseen a deal with PokerStars inked on approx 25th March, but only two weeks took the option to get out of the deal after PokerStars got named in what is now known in gambling circles as 'Black Friday'. Wynn's press release read:
LAS VEGAS, April 15, 2011—Wynn Resorts, Limited announced today thаt іt terminated іtѕ alliance wіth PokerStars, thе online poker company. Thе сhοісе wаѕ reached аѕ a result οf thе indictment unsealed bу thе U.S. Attorney fοr thе Southern District οf Nеw York.
Online casino websites such as bwin.party digital entertainment's PartyCasino are also understood to be up following the announcement.
Since the US Attorney's Office announced last Friday that it was pressing charges against 11 people over alleged fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling, PKR has seen a rise of around 21% in weekly traffic, while PartyPoker has risen 9%, 888Poker 5% and the iPoker network 4%. In contrast, Full Tilt dropped 48%. The data comes from our friends at Pokerscout.
Several business-savvy poker rooms have launched major promos to capitalize on the unique situation.
Shares in several British online gambling companies have soared in the last week. Bwin shares rose by 30%, 888 was up 18% and online gaming software provider Playtech saw its stocks climb by 8%.
Many media companies including Forbes, Reuters, Bloomberg, Gambling911 and EGR indicate that bwin.party digital entertainment may be the igaming company that ends up doing best out of the situation, given their recent successful merger, settlement with the US Department of Justice in April 2009, and government b2b dealings in a number of countries. Party is also looking to expand is b2b and news media deals with its World Poker Tour brand, currently broadcast in Australia on Rupert Murdoch's Fox Sports via Foxtel subscriber television.
Richard Branson's Virgin Games is watching the situation closely, however as of print Virgin Games are not available to Australians, New Zealanders or Canadians, whereas Party is.
Australian land based casino, Crown Casino in Melbourne, has accepted numerous PartyGaming - PartyPoker satellite poker players over the past few years, a trend that looks to continue. Party and NetGen Gaming are strongly rumoured to want to release a Kerry Packer, Underbelly and Andre The Giant online slot game, but have not publicly commented. Party has existing b2b deals with Marvel Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Infinity Ward, StudioCanal, Frank Sinatra Enterprises and Edgar Rice Burroughs, so don't bet against them.
Crown Limited top brass James Packer is yet to publicly comment specifically about online casino or online poker, but he did however sign off an investment deal with online retailing giant DealsDirect.
Ellerston Capital, a fund management company owned by the Packer family's Consolidated Press Holdings, took a “minority cornerstone” investment in the online retailing site DealsDirect yesterday.
“It signals a real coming of age for online retail, with businesses like Ellerston getting into the game, it is well and truly 'game on',” said DealsDirect's co-founder Paul Greenberg.
The transaction, estimated by the Australian Financial Review to be worth $10 million, underscores the deeper embrace of online retail by the media sector and the investment community.
A Media Man spokesperson said of the Packer - Deals Direct deal "James Packer's recent investment into the online retail space shows just how keen he is on the online business. Crown Limited have an impressive portfolio of websites for their properties, however that did not do the man or company justice. Crown Casino Aussie Millions also accepts poker players from a number of online poker brands. Packer also has the 50% investment in Betfair, and rumours persist of a Crown online casino, a venture with a strong possibility of Packer mate Shane Warne getting in on the action. Packer is also keen to see more interaction between Australian television broadcasts of poker on Fox Sports and his traditional media ventures. Mr Packer famously went on recent a few years ago with 'Internet is like electricity', something this very news reports proves correct".

Kat Ferguson performing artist live at The Wall, by Eva Rinaldi - 24th April 2011
It had been almost year since I had the pleasure of hearing my friend Kat perform her musical genius, in the grounds of the Sydney Opera House no less, so when I found out Kat was going to do her thing close to where I'm based at the very moment in downtown Leichhardt, I jumped at the chance.
Leichhardt's Bald Faced Stag Hotel, a beautifully revamped traditional hotel, had never looked or sounded so good.
I'm pleased to report that Kat's performance has further improved, as impressive as she was way back then. That's not the only positive change. Kat has two new members to her band. There's Dinesh Ekanayake (base guitar), Tyran Rotondo (drums / percussion) and Chaminda Samaraweera (drums).
Kat's special guests who performed on stage included Jessie May and Cordelia Rotonda.
The evening's support acts were Dan and Noel Trio, Untapped and Angelena Locke.
The songs that most took my liking tonight were Delirious, You Were The One, All He Needs and Boulder.
Without question All He Needs is the most emotive song where one can tell instantly that there's deep meaning and a powerful story behind it. This song is the first song I ever heard Kat perform, and it tells the story of a brave little boy, Jesse, who lost his courageous battle with cancer. Jesse's wish was that other's would be able to survive cancer, and Kat has been spreading the word across Australia for the past few years.
To me Kat sounds rather like Chrissy Amphlett and Sheryl Crow.
She counts her musical influences being Amanda Marshall and the Baby Animals.
I loved the way the night closed off with Kat handing the stage to 3 year-old Cordelia Rotonda who belted out What The Hell with power and finis far exceeding her young age. Cordelia, if you and your parents are reading this, stick with it girl - it appears you have a very bright future ahead of you, and keep learning and having fun with Kat and the band. And Tyran, the super talented 10-year old drummer - you are amazing. No wonder with mentors such as Chaminda sharing his knowledge. It seemed like I was watching a young Peter Criss (from KISS fame) at times, and that is a huge compliment.
As individuals they are all wonderfully talented, and as a unit, they appear destined for greatness and success on all levels, should they be able to maintain the current standard, and just keep moving forward with it.
If you've heard Kat before you know just how great she is, and if you haven't and appreciate great music with heart, passion and meaning, you need to get along to one of her upcoming appearances.

Perth Taxi Driver Robs Fare From Burswood Punter Passenger...
A Perth taxi driver has been charged with robbing a passenger he was driving home from the popular Burswood Casino. Western Australian police said the 29-year-old taxi driver from Mirrabooka had attacked his passenger, a 25-year-old Tuart Hill man.
At the passenger's request, the driver had stopped at an ATM to get cash for his fare home from the casino. When his transaction was declined, the man offered the taxi driver his driver's licence as security until he paid him next day. The driver refused, snatching the man's wallet before he was able to retrieve it and run away.
Police said in a statement it would be alleged the taxi driver then followed the man to a car park where he assaulted him, punching him numerous times to his head and face. During the assault, the victim fell to the ground and the driver then stole his mobile phone. The victim sustained minor injuries during the incident. The driver has been charged with robbery and will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on May 5. Unfortunately the punters night ended on an unhappy and unlucky note. Burswood Casino did not comment.

Man Put In Can For Stabbing Wife During Gambling Tiff...
A Melbournite (Melbourne)e man who fatally stabbed his wife during an argument about his gambling linking has been sentenced to nine years in jail. A jury found former butcher Peter Lubic, 42, of Noble Park, guilty of manslaughter last year for stabbing his wife Barbara in the neck. The blow severed her carotid artery. The Victorian Supreme Court heard Mrs Lubic had challenged her husband's gambling habit. The court was told he called the TAB and called a taxi to take him to the Crown Casino in the hours after he killed her. In sentencing, Justice Ross Robson told Lubic that although it was only a single stab wound, it did not lower the degree of savagery on someone who trusted and honoured him and who should have been safe in her own home. Lubic will be eligible for parole in six-and-a-half years. The public is encouraged not to let their gambling get out of hand.
Gold Coast's Jupiters Hotel And Casino Gets New Boss...
The French native Frederic Luvisutto has been given the role as new boss of Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast. Tabcorp owns the casino and its senior executive, Larry Mullins, announced the appointment this week, stating Luvisutto would start on May 18. "Frederic comes to Jupiters with more than ten years experience as a senior executive in casino hotel operations and project development in the United States," Mullins said. Luvisutto most recently was engaged my MGM Resorts where he held the position of executive vice president hotel operations at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Luvisutto has been involved in several new developments during his time in casinos and Mullins said he was the perfect person to oversee the revamp of Jupiters. Jupiters has a two-stage $350 million development in the works and the first part, worth $175 million, involves eight new restaurants and bars, a new nightclub, new spa facilities as well as expanded and refurbished gaming facilities. Stage 2, coming up soon, is also going to cost about $175 million, is going to likely get the green light should the Gold Coast winning the 2018 Commonwealth Games bid. "Frederic understands what it takes to create world-class facilities and he has an impressive record for improving customer service across several hotel casino properties," he said. "I'm confident he will take the experience at Jupiters to a whole new level". A Media Man spokesperson said "If anyone can add a new dynamic in the Australian land based casinos wars that looks to be Frederic Luvisutto at the moment. The odds are appearing to even out in Crown Casino VS Tabcorp land based casinos, and we wish Jupiters new boss well in his role. We're sure he will be busy striving to become #1 down under in Australia.
