PPV (Pay Per View). News and history in combat sports

PPV means Pay-Per-View. A one-off charge to view what is typically a combat sports live event. WWEs legendary promoter Vince McMahon is an innovator in this realm. One time rival Ted Turner also was an early adopter with World Championship Wrestling's 'Starrcade' some four decades back in history from today. The then World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) went to considerable lengths to cap the success of Starrcade and propel its own wrestling superstars forward to broadcasting operations and the public at large. WrestleMania rose to household name status and so did eventually Survivor Series, Royal Rumble and SummerSlam. Many of today's WWE major events are entitled Premium Live Events aka PLE. WWE's Triple H frequently appears at press conferences and such events and the vast majority of the media events are broadcast live on platforms such as YouTube. In the United States the WWE moved its PPV and streaming service from the WWE Network to Peacock. In Australia the WWE is broadcast via Binge. Broadcasts are sometimes called OTT - over the top, which is industry jargon. The UFC,the world's leading MMA (mixed martial arts) promotion is understood to have borrowed a few WWE type promotional tactics to help promote some of its fights, be it via media events, storyline development and more. Only a few pro wrestlers have truly enjoyed strong careers in MMA and professional wrestling and the most prominent are Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler. Josh Barnett (Game Changer Wrestling) is an innovator in this field however only hardcore fans and industry insiders are familiar with his contributions. The late Judo Gene LeBell was a legendary figure in martial arts/wresting cross-over and famously fought boxer Milo Savage. Pro wrestling and MMA enjoy a rich history and wrestling also enjoys its roots going back to "smoke filled arenas", as Vince McMahon and Triple H sometimes remind the wrestling world - as well as some partly hidden history to the "Carney's" - carnival and circus. Special attractions were a key draw and eventually pro wrestling of the catch as catch can style became more mainstream. We hope you enjoy this journey down the wrestling and MMA memory lane. Now, get ready for WWE SummerSlam in a few short hours and well done to boxing's Jake Paul and wrestling's Logan Paul who are both about to make sporting history by being on two competing PPV type events - of different disciplines, at the same time.
